Budget Stuff

Here is a list of expenses that Bianca, Ryan, Sarah, and I calculated at Home Depot. Please help add to whatever I'm missing, or change anything if you have better prices, materials, or ideas.

Drywall (4'x8'): $9.94
- 16 pieces = $159.04
- However, we need 32 by my count which = $318.08

Pallet wood Free - Sarah assures us she can find them.

Posts (4"x4"x12') = $12.97
- 16 pieces = $207.52

Metal frames to attach lighting (high hat furring channels, 12'): $4.09
- 208 ft.* = 18 pieces = $73.62

Flourescent light fixtures (4'): $9
- 18 fixtures* = $162.00

Shelf brackets: $1.09
- 30 brackets* = $32.70

Hanging screws: $8.54
- 2 boxes = $17.08

Sod: Free
- Have you ever heard the old maxim, "There is no such thing as a free pile of sod" (TINSTAAFPOS)? It's just not true.

Screws: Free
- Ryan will generously donate them to us once he buys some.

*My estimates here are based on a very rough idea for a lighting situation which will be explained later.

Total: $811

Other expenses:
Extension cords?
Stepping stones?
Food?

my only question is what is the grass going to look like? If it is piled high on top of eachother it might be dead by the time we get it. Should we set it out and water it before the show? We can use the back of the Ceramics studio if we ask. I'm sure we can set it up before the lights go up in the space and water it then. I guess we can figure it out later if we run into issues.

I'm just curious how you are calculating how many pieces of drywall we specifically need. I count 18 for both sides of every partition (based on them being 8' long). We're not planning to use the wall space if you're including that, we already have plenty of hanging area within the partitions themselves.

do we know how much $ we are getting for the materials fee? i think the estimate was $450. do we have a solid figure yet?

For the drywall I figured that each 8 ft. segment on the plan requires 4 pieces. I thought that each piece would be displayed vertically so that the height would also be 8 feet. I think that makes it double your calculation, and that also means I was wrong anyway, we would need 36 pieces, not 18. Does that make sense?

Do we need 8 ft tall pieces for every wall though? I guess we should all discuss that...because if we don't, obviously it would save money.

We absolutely do NOT need 8ft walls all the way through! Lol, that's way too expensive!!! We only need the 18 pieces, according to the bottom drawing. We may need a couple extra for the people with taller work, but we'll limit them all to that wall (for money's sake). And the metal for the lighting may be way off, too.. Depending on the fixtures and amt of light given off by the tubes, we'll probably only need about 1 1/2ft of overhang. Maybe two to three 3ft sections of furring channels per 8ft section. Sarah explained it to me. The sections sit on top, perpendicular to the walls. At first I didn't understand what she was talking about, but now it all makes sense. We'd only need about 6 pieces. If each 8ft section gets three pieces of metal, and each piece is 3ft long (1 1/2ft on each side of the wall, minus the actual wall thickness, of course), then that's 9ft of metal per 8ft wall. If we don't share on the 16 footers, then that's 72 total feet of metal. That's six 12ft pieces if we do it this way. We may wind up doing it differently, but it still takes down the price... About 25 bucks instead of 73.. Just those two things would knock the total down into the $600 range, leaving about half our budget for marketing and food and crap. The stepping stone idea needs to be voted on before we consider it, and the extension cord problem may have to wait until we hear from our potential H. Depot sources. I like the stones, and I'll fund them myself as access to my pieces if nobody else wants them... Or not, if everyone thinks they really wouldn't look good. I have a great vision of it, but I probably won't have enough space for it :(

Ok, good. I thought that was too much drywall.

I always liked the idea of the stepping stones. But I remember bringing the idea up in class a few weeks ago and people saying they were too expensive. But if we can afford it, I think it would not only look nice, but be fun as well. It would definitely help with any issues we'd have of people tearing up sod walking all over it.

I agree.

I like to present on letterhead a letter to the home depot I work at to get some kind of donation. I need to get this in soon because the store will be changing mangagement.
I was informed by my store manager that they issue gift cards in $25 increments.

Management team of the Alafaya Trail Home Depot

Emerge is a 30 artist collective made of graduating Bachelor of Fine Arts students from the University of Central Florida. Our goal for the semester is to host a three day gallery event, March 29-31, which will be free and opened to the public in downtown Orlando. We will be hosting the event at 801 North Orange Drive, a currently vacate storefront, that is still in the rough stages of construction.
The location requires a lot of building materials to transform it into a gallery space where painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and video, in a variety of styles and approaches can be displayed. The necessary materials range from 4x8 sheets of drywall and 4x4x12 wood post to make partitions and high hat furring channels and 4’ fluorescent light fixtures to prove sufficient lighting, along with hardware, hanging screws and shelf brackets.
* I’m just using the materials that have been list under budget on the blog
The only funding we have comes directly from the students. We would greatly appreciate any donations that the store can afford to give.

Thank you for you time and consideration.

*I don’t know if we should just include my connect information since I work there or something else?

Give me feedback! Let me know if there is anything you want included or changed.
